An information resource for Washington voters

VotingforJudges is a nonpartisan, impartial source of information about judicial elections in the state of Washington. The site was established in 2006 to provide information to voters in connection with the judicial candidates running for election that year.

2014

There will be judicial elections in November 2014 for the Washington Supreme Court, Washington Court of Appeals, several county Superior Courts, and all county District Courts.

NOTE: Most of the information for the NOVEMBER 4 GENERAL ELECTION has now been updated and included, but UPDATES WILL BE CONTINUING IN THE DAYS AHEAD. We apologize for the presence of old information or the absence of new information.

Washington Supreme Court: Four out of nine incumbents - Justices Charles Johnson, Mary Fairhurst, Debra Stephens, and Mary Yu - are all up for election this year. Justice Fairhurst and Justice Yu drew no challengers, so they will appear without opposition on the November ballot. Eddie Yoon is running against Justice Johnson, and John (Zamboni) Scannell is running against Justice Stephens. Those contests are currently scheduled for the November general election.

Court of Appeals: There will be judicial elections in all three divisions of the Washington Court of Appeals this year. These will include most counties in the state. There are no contested elections in the Court of Appeals, however, so each of the candidates who filed for a position will appear unopposed on the November ballot.

Superior Court: There will be Superior Court elections in Adams, Asotin, Clallam, Clark, Columbia, Garfield, King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Yakima Counties this year. There is only one contested election, in Clark County. That contest, between Bernard Veljacic and Robert Vukanovich. Candidates who filed in all other counties were unopposed, so they will either appear alone on the November ballot or (in larger counties) they were deemed elected to their respective two-year unfilled terms after no opponents filed.

District Court: All District Court judicial positions will be up for election this year. See your particular county for details.

Municipal Court: Most elected Municipal Court judges were up for election in 2013. There are races in Seattle and Tacoma, and there might be some positions on the ballot in other cities, especially if there are vacancies that need to be filled or have been temporarily filled by interim appointments. Again, check your particular county for details.

The American Bar Association honored VotingforJudges with its 2007 Silver Gavel Award for Media and the Arts, in the "New Media" category, "recognizing outstanding efforts to foster public understanding of the law."

The Atlanta-based Foundation for Improvement of Justice presented one of its Paul H. Chapman Justice Awards for 2007 to VotingforJudges.

Paul Fjelstad, the Kitsap attorney who created and provides ongoing updates to VotingforJudges, was honored with the 2007 King County Bar Association President's Award for his work.
