Marilyn Haan

Legal/Judicial Experience: Cowlitz County Superior Court Judge. Previously part-time judge/commissioner pro tem for over thirteen years. Over twenty-three years as a prosecutor, public defender, private practitioner and municipal attorney.

Other Professional Experience: Taught law classes. Management.

Education: Law Degree, University of Puget Sound School of Law 1988. Law and Justice Degree, Bachelor of Arts, Central Washington University 1984.

Community Service: Rotary International, Kiwanis International, Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Legal Aid Board, Reading is Fundamental. Prior Boards: Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Bar Association (Past President), YMCA, Child Psychiatry Coalition, Children’s Justice and Advocacy Center, Cowlitz County Guidance Association, Red Hat Thrift Store (domestic violence shelter contributor), Vulnerable Adult Task Force.

Statement: Judge Marilyn Haan is a Cowlitz County Superior Court Judge who also has over thirteen years experience as a part-time judge/commissioner pro tem and twenty-three years experience as an attorney. Judge Haan will maintain the integrity of the judiciary, improve access to justice, and implement case management modifications to expedite case resolution.

Judge Haan serves on the statewide Superior Court Criminal Rules and Law Committee, Therapeutic Court Committee and chairs the Superior Court Local Rules Committee. She attended the State Judicial College, National Domestic Violence Training, and Children’s Justice Conference. She is a member of the Washington State Superior Court Judges Association, National Association of Women Judges, and National Judges Association.

Marilyn is married to Tom Haan, a hospice chaplain. Together they have five children and five grandchildren. She loves spending time with her family, going to the ocean, and playing with their dogs.

Judge Haan is passionate about meeting the needs of people with mental health disabilities, as she raised two children with autism disorders. She is also committed to educating the public about the legal system. She taught law classes and organized numerous mock trials to bring the classroom into the courtroom.
