Washington Supreme Court

Supreme Court justices are elected to six-year terms by voters throughout the entire state. There are nine Supreme Court justices, and Washington residents will vote for three in 2012.

Supreme Court candidates appear on the primary election ballot on August 7, 2012. If a candidate receives more than 50% of the votes cast in the primary, that candidate appears on the general election ballot without opposition. If no candidate receives more than 50% in the primary, the top two candidates appear on the general election ballot on November 6, 2012.


Position 2: Susan Owens is the incumbent, and she is running for re-election. She is being challenged by Douglas McQuaid and Scott Stafne.

Position 8: Steve Gonzalez is the incumbent, and he is running for re-election. He is being challenged by Bruce Danielson. This race will be decided in the primary election.

Position 9: Bruce Hilyer, John Ladenburg, Sheryl Gordon McCloud, and Richard Sanders are running for an open seat.

Court of Appeals

Division One, District Three

(Island, San Juan, Skagit, and Whatcom Counties)

District Three elects one judge. That position will be on the 2012 primary ballot. The incumbent is Mary Kay Becker. She is running unopposed.

Superior Court

Superior Court judges are elected to four-year terms. Most Superior Court positions throughout Washington are up for election in 2012.

In counties with a population of less than 100,000, all Superior Court candidates will appear on the August 7 primary ballot, regardless of whether they face opposition.

The incumbents for each of the Superior Court positions are running without opposition:

District Court

District Court judges are elected to four-year terms; most were elected in 2010, and their terms extend through the end of 2014. Vacant positions may appear on the 2012 ballot in some counties.
