Darrell Phillipson

King County District Court

Southeast Division, Position Two

Darrell Phillipson

Occupation: Judge, King County District Court, 27 years

Education: University of California, Berkeley, JD; Eastern Washington University, BA with Honors

Statement: It has been my privilege and honor to serve as a King County District Court Judge for the last 27 years.

I have dedicated my career to providing justice to the citizens of King County. I have served in every capacity, presiding over criminal and civil cases, and juvenile and dependency hearings. For several years now, I have had the challenge of presiding over domestic violence cases, which often require difficult decisions that significantly impact children and families.

I believe strongly in personal responsibility for one’s actions. Sometimes that requires tough sentencing when appropriate; equally important are treatment and counseling when it is likely to succeed. My highest reward for serving as a judge is receiving thanks from defendants and their families for helping them become clean, sober and free from the justice system.

In my many years on the bench, I have served as the Presiding Judge in King County as well as in many other leadership positions. I frequently lecture and teach classes to other judges, universities, law schools, the press and public. In every judicial evaluation I have been rated highly, with an excellent record of decisions.

Over the years, I helped bring innovative changes to the courts that increased efficiency and reduced costs. That experience is particularly important during this time of severe budget cuts to our criminal justice system. I want to continue the work to improve our courts, which will require the best efforts of experienced and competent judges.

It would be my privilege to continue to serve King County, and you, for the next four years. I ask for your continued vote of support.
