Ratings and Endorsements

Votingforjudges.org does not rate or endorse any judicial candidates. Our goal is to gather information impartially from an array of diverse sources and to make that information available in a convenient single location so that voters can make fully informed decisions.

We will gather together here evaluations from a variety of sources. The ratings and recommendations offered by the sources result from the different processes they use in their evaluations:

1. We believe that the most helpful evaluations result from a careful, systematic process that draws upon candidate questionnaires, interviews with sources and references, and consideration of the characteristics that make the best judges. (See our FAQ section on desirable qualities for a judge.) Evaluations conducted in this manner are listed below as Candidate ratings. These evaluations come from various bar associations and government groups. Some bar associations conduct member polls; we include those in this section, too.

2. We also include various Newspaper endorsements. These are the result of the newspapers' editorial board decisions regarding the candidates.

3. Finally, we sometimes include Organizational endorsements. These recommendations come from a wide variety of organizations. In general, this group of ratings and endorsements is based upon each organization's view of how closely a candidate's past or expected future rulings are in accord with the organizations' ideological goals.

In considering any rating or endorsement, voters should evaluate the evaluators. Voters should carefully consider the process used to arrive at the rating or endorsement, as well as the goals of the evaluators.

As the election approaches, Votingforjudges.org will include ratings and endorsements from numerous organizations. We provide this information so that voters will be better informed about the candidates. We do not rate or endorse any candidates; the ratings and endorsements of organizations included at this site reflect the views of those individual organizations and not necessarily the views of votingforjudges.org or its sponsors.
