LEGAL/JUDICIAL EXPERIENCE: Elected to the Supreme Court in 1994, Chief Justice Alexander is the only current justice to have served at two other court levels: 10 years on the Court of Appeals and 11 years on the Thurston and Mason County Superior Court. He is currently chief justice, having been twice elected to that position by the members of the Supreme Court. His accomplishments include opening Supreme Court sessions to television, holding occasional court sessions in locations other than the state capital, opening access to court records, working for an increase in juror pay, and advocating limits on contributions to judicial candidates.

Candidate Statement: Before becoming a judge, Chief Justice Alexander practiced law in Olympia. He earned law and undergraduate degrees at the University of Washington, and served as an infantry lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Chief Justice Alexander’s judicial experience is unequalled as is his commitment to improving the state’s justice system and providing equal justice for all. He is rated “exceptionally well qualified” by the King County Bar and endorsed by such diverse organizations and individuals as the Washington Democratic Party; Mainstream Republicans; Association of Washington Business; Washington State Labor Council; Washington Education Association; and former Governors Evans, Gardner, and Spellman.
