Washington Conservation Voters

Endorsements

"Washington Conservation Voters (WCV) has made endorsements in six contested judicial races in 2006, including the three races for the Washington Supreme Court. WCV’s endorsement criteria for judicial candidates is based solely on: (1) judicial experience and qualifications; and (2) a demonstrated commitment to a fair and impartial judiciary.

"Every candidate that had declared during WCV’s endorsement process (mid-July) was offered the opportunity to participate. Please note that for the three Supreme Court races, the candidates that were contacted included Justice Tom Chambers, Justice Susan Owens, Senator Steve Johnson, Chief Justice Gerry Alexander, and John Groen. Neither of the other four individuals who filed to run in late-July — Burrage, M. Johnson, Smith, and Ericson — were known as potential candidates at the time, and thus they were not included in our process. All six candidates in the three contested races for the Court of Appeals participated in our endorsement process. The end result was that the following judicial candidates have received WCV’s endorsement:

Supreme Court
Justice Susan Owens
Justice Tom Chambers
Chief Justice Gerry Alexander

Court of Appeals
Judge Mary Kay Becker (Division I)
Judge Joel Penoyar (Division II)
Judge Christine Quinn-Brintnall (Division II)
