AWB Endorses Alexander, Johnson for Washington State Supreme Court
OLYMPIA, July 24 – The Association of Washington Business announces the
endorsements of two judicial candidates in contested elections for the
Washington State Supreme Court.
In Position 8, AWB endorses incumbent Chief Justice Gerry Alexander, a
12-year veteran of the high court. “We put Chief Justice Alexander’s record
through a high level of scrutiny,” AWB Vice President of Governmental
Affairs Gary Chandler said. “Although we’ve disagreed with him occasionally
on the law, his record showed us that Chief Justice Alexander is a fair and
impartial jurist who does not come to the bench with an agenda. We believe
we can get a fair shake in front of him and that is the hallmark of a good
judge.”
In AWB’s 2006 Judicial Scorecard, which evaluates justices’ votes in cases
of importance to the business community, Chief Justice Alexander scored 54
percent overall and was the third highest scoring justice. His scores were
particularly strong in tax and workers’ compensation cases. “In several
issues of major interest to the business community, AWB agreed with the
opinions of Chief Justice Alexander more often than not,” Chandler said.
“Over his long career, Justice Alexander has been an asset to the state
judiciary, and we are pleased to support his bid for a final term.”
AWB also endorses former state Senator Stephen Johnson of Kent for Supreme
Court Position 2. Senator Johnson is a multi-year recipient of AWB’s
Cornerstone Award, given to members of the Legislature with an 80% or higher
voting record with AWB. “AWB knows Senator Johnson well, he knows our issues
well, and we have worked together for many years on matters important to
employers across the state,” Chandler said. “AWB believes the court would
benefit greatly from Senator Johnson’s legislative experience tempered by
his philosophy of judicial restraint.”
